Publishing

Publishing is the largest and possibly the longest standing media sector in the UK. This area of media employs around 148,000 people in the UK; that's more than TV and film combined.

Publishing refers to anything which is printed; this can include magazines, books and newspapers, all of which are constantly in huge demand by people of all ages across the globe, hence why this sector is so large in comparison with other sectors.

Jobs within the publishing industry include:

  • Editorial positions
  • Printing
  • Advertising
  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Packaging
  • Distribution
  • Graphic Design
"As Yet Untitled Publishing" (abbreviated to AYU) is an independent publishing company run by a woman in London. This company is entirely independent as she is self employed and runs the company alone. On her website, ayupublishing.co.uk, she says:

"In 2012 I founded AYUpublishing, a micro-press that embraces and reflects my interest in book arts, the changing world of independent publishing, and through which I publish my work. As AYUpublishing I produce Elbow Room, a series of art journals and live events that celebrate art in all guises, community and cross-disciplinary dialogue. Elbow Room is an ongoing project with each volume produced in limited hand-bound editions, and distributed online, at artists’ book fairs and specialist bookshops.
My work is collected by The Poetry Library, Chelsea College of Art Library, Artists’ Books Collection, the Artists’ Book Collection at Bank Street Arts and Tate Library and Archive"

In contrast to this independent publisher, Penguin Random House is a company formed from the merger of Penguin Group and Random House Publishing. Penguin Random House is a huge worldwide publishing company, with over 10,000 people employed over five continents.
